Black Lug

Black Lug (black lug worms) are a great sea fishing bait. They are often known as 'black gold' among keen sea match anglers and many match fisherman won't consider fishing a serious match unless they have a good supply.

What are Black Lug?
They are part of the same family as your standard Lug Worm (Blow Lug) they are larger and have tougher skins, they are also found deeper in the sand.

Why are Black Lug so good?
They are so good for a number of reasons. Beach anglers like them mainly because they are tough and stay on the hook longer, they have better juices and generally make a more appealing bait.

Why are Black Lug more expensive than normal lug worms?
Black Lug are more difficult to collect and thus require more time, they are regarded as a 'premium' bait and attract a premium price.

How to use Black Lug.
They are often used in conjunction with another bait - a favourite combo for dogfish is black lug tipped with sandeel. They can be used on their own for flatties such as Plaice and Dabs. Most of the smaller round fish love Black Lug.

How to dig Black Lug.
You need to go right down to the low water mark, its normally best on a spring low tide to collect. Look for the normal squiggle cast and then the blow hole will be about 10inches away from it. Most bait diggers use bait pumps as they don't damage the worm. Dig around both holes and about a foot deep and you should find some black gold!
